Vulnerability + Courage

I’ve been exploring vulnerability these days-ha I guess years to be precise and I’ll be the first to admit its not always easy. But the more we practice + embody it, it becomes easier to be honest, authentic, and alive than to hide from our feelings + desires and accommodate to others just to be accepted, etc etc the list goes on. In the past I’ve run away from it because its a protective mechanism for me, and still can be…

It’s been interesting to notice my own patterns and how society and culture influences who I’ve been and am becoming. I come from a family that isn’t very open emotionally, so its been a huge learning process uncovering these blockages as they’ve come along. Of course I had to go through different relationships to notice the pattern, and destroyed many of them unfortunately. But I can’t turn the hands of time, I can only forgive myself and give myself the empathy and compassion as I would to any child in need of comfort and nurturing. What I realized was I was running away from myself because I was so afraid of what I would uncover…

Through the years of excavating my soul and ego, lies an innocent and open hearted being ready to embrace the world and all its love and beauty. -I wish I knew that when I was a kid- We sometimes have to learn it the hard way, but the hard way is where we grow and learn about ourselves. I believe being born into this world is really a re birth in many ways. To be in this world, it really requires courage and relentless trust and faith in the process of life to know that despite it all, we will be okay.

I feel compelled to write this because lately I’ve been going through some deep transformation and exploring my own edge and comfort zone. Not easy but doable because I’ve reached another level of intimacy with myself and I can’t run anymore. There’s no where to run in fact. And it doesn’t feel comfortable to run anymore. I think I’ve burned that bridge and theres no turning back…to be authentic with myself requires vulnerability and the courage to be okay with that. To let go of the outcome and expectations and let life run its course and to know its part of the growing pains.

I think a big part of being vulnerable requires change. Change is the only constant thing that exists in the universe…and I think its constantly testing our potential for greatness. Our potential is SO grand and massive, it can be scary, I kNOW! So we hide behind our comfort zone and hope that nobody notices we’re afraid of showing who we really are.

But I’m not here to do that anymore, I want to live my life to its fullest as I’m sure you all do too……and I’m here to serve and share my passion inspiring others to live the life they’ve always imagined, because its possible I know it…I’m dedicated to my path and being the best version of myself that I can. And thats what I’m here to do!

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda ( pronounced ah-yoor-vay-dah) 

Ayurveda is a comprehensive system of natural health care that comes from India. It dates back to 2000-5000 B.C. It is a natural, holistic, preventative, and therapeutic approach to wellness and good health. Ayurveda literally means the “science of  life.” One of the reasons why it is so unique compared to other holistic paths is because it addresses all aspects of one’s being: the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual body.

Ayurveda is based upon the knowledge of ones constitution. It recognizes that the 5 elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air, and ether are present in all matter, and exist within each individual being. These elements manifest in a human being as the 3 basic principles or humors known as the Doshas: Vata, Pitta, Kapha. They govern all biological, psychological and physiological functions of the mind and body.

When your natural constitution becomes vitiated from the incorrect use of diet and lifestyle, imbalances are created in your constitution which may lead to ill health or dis-ease. Ayurveda’s goal is designed to promote human happiness, health and creative growth. It keeps the healthy maintain good health, and the dis-eased to regain their health. Most importantly it recognizes that we are an active participant in our own path to healing and so it asks the patient to take their health and healing into their own hands. This process can be very empowering and life transforming!

After studying Yoga forever, I discovered Ayurveda some years ago ( of course, sister sciences), and now I’m so grateful to be able to provide  guidance and the space to teach others how to understand their own body in relation to their daily routines and lifestyle. Essentially with Ayurveda, we find ways to “move” through the changes of life with ease and more awareness. I think its important to meet yourself where you’re are at and encourage yourself to commit to changing some of these old patterns to help promote longer lasting results. 

Ayurveda’s is based on the 3 Pillars of Life: sleeping, eating, and sex ( how we expend our daily energy). Because we are all different, Ayurveda’s treatments are specialized individually according to one’s Dosha or constitution. It carries the idea that ” one man’s food, is another man’s poison.”

It uses remedies such as: diet and nutrition, lifestyle counseling, cleansing therapies (Pancha Karma) , Bliss Body Therapies, Oleation Therapy, yoga, exercise, meditation, herbs, and aromatherapy to bring one back to balance.

On your journey to health, my goal is to bring compassion, patience, unconditional love and unwavering faith to meeting you wherever you’re at!

Benefits of Massage and Touch Therapy

Abyangha is an Ayurvedic massage that aids in the removal of toxins from the tissues and helps clear the lymphatic system of waste (suggested when going through any detoxification) and improves immunity. It is also very relaxing, as well as lubricating and cleansing for the skin and deeper tissues. 

Marma point massage, a technique similar to acupuncture or acupressure where specific points are deliberately pressed and massaged may also be applied for deeper healing. Massage therapy is a very powerful and effective tool in healing the body and mind of trauma, pain, or stress.

Medical professions speak about the importance of the six week “window” of time after a mother gives birth, but don’t really know why. Some believe it is because it takes the uterus 6 weeks to fully re align itself after giving birth, but Ayurveda understands that there is much more to that!

*According to Ayurveda, there are 3 sacred periods in a woman’s life, one of them being the 42 days after giving birth. This time is considered possibly more important than the pregnancy itself! Psycho physiologically she is just as delicate as her newborn baby and this is a very delicate time.

Tips to get Unstuck from Old Habits

Why do we get stuck in our old habits and why is it so hard to get out?

I’d like to offer some insight from the sages and wise ones from the Eastern Yogic and Ayurvedic Tradition.

Whatever we think, say or do eventually become “impressions” or patterns what Yogi’s define as samskaras. Samskaras are sort of like grooves that are imprinted into our being that define and shape who we are and who we become. These grooves are difficult to resist. All of our actions defined as karma contribute to our samskaras. Many of the impressions we carry with us to this day are the ones already imbedded into our subconscious. We erase our samskaras through karma and repeating them reinforces them, basically a cycle that continues. They’re not only negative ones, so they can be positive too.

Scientifically speaking, for the western mind to understand this concept, through our actions we are basically creating and strengthening neuro-pathways in the brain that reinforce our beliefs and patterns.The more we do something, it becomes ingrained into our mind and body. For example, if we go to the gym every day to maintain our health and stamina, its most likely we will go to the gym tomorrow because it becomes a habit right? Likewise, if you don’t exercise or go to the gym every day it reinforces the habit of you not going to the gym.

Healing is the process of erasing samskaras. When our past doesn’t have control over us, we become free of our samskaras or tendencies/patterns.

One of my brilliant Yoga teachers Rod Stryker once said that 95% of human behavior is on avoiding pain. Makes sense, right? This is true especially when it comes to healing old patterns and habits and it’s one of the reasons why we might not stop to change in the first place-unless it becomes too painful and then the pain of not changing, will make you change!

Eventually the pain of staying the same becomes more painful than making change-and something has to happen!

Rod Stryker also spoke about 2 types of pain, regret and discipline. He says we choose which we’ll suffer, and a lot of us get stuck in regret when we’re in the vicious cycle of not taking proper care for ourselves. And the other is taking charge and using discipline as a tool to improving the quality of your life. Because lets face it, if we want to change our “old” ways, we gotta do something about it-action! And this takes discipline and practice.

I used to be ALL about the word discipline back in the day, but it sounds so regimental to me now. So I prefer the word “ritual”. Whether we realize it or not, we are creating rituals and routines around our lives in every moment.The choice is in the moment. And in every moment we have a choice that creates the next moment and so forth ( the cycle of karma and samskara) 

Most humans have the ability to choose what that will be. And by creating new “rituals” in our daily lives is the key to changing those pesky old negative habits or samskaras. 

Now how do we do that?

Simple tips:

Just Start: No excuses, it’s gonna be a process so the first step is to start.

Be consistent: I remind my clients that its so much more important when starting a new ritual, to start small and make sure its a doable thing. If its not, it may deter you from continuing and following through. And being consistent is so important. It might be starting with an exercise routine 20 minutes 3 times a week at the same time and place and then building once you’ve got that new habit down, vs trying to exercise 2 hours one day here and there and then stopping ( a pattern for many of us)

Prioritize: You have to prioritize your self care! We’re taught to go go go, and then we burn out. Self Care is essential to our health and well being, and if we’re not giving to ourselves, how can we expect to give to others? Take time daily to set aside time for yourself, whether its exercise, meditation, or cooking a healthy meal. In the long run, self care will save you time and you’ll feel happier doing life.

Don’t be hard on yourself: There might be some fall backs, but thats okay. It’s a part of the journey. If you fall, or regress, dust yourself off and get right back up! And remember to be kind and gentle with yourself. You’re doing the best that you can! 

Love yourSelf: Self Care is an act of Self Love! There might be times you feel guilty taking such good care of yourselves. It’s normal, our culture glorifies the busy-ness of life and self care might be a foreign thing to many people. The more we value ourselves and our self worth, the more conviction and determined we are to uphold those standards for self care. Don’t settle for less!

EmBODYment Meditation

There’s plenty of ways to set goals and manifest your dreams into a reality. I use vision boards, journaling, dreams, sharing + saying my intentions aloud so the universe can REALLY hear me!

This is a meditation I started using with my clients that helps you embody what feelings or states of BEing you want to experience in your life once you achieve your goals. Many people are waiting to be happy or satisfied with life once they get what they want. Why not the other way around?! When we embody what we want, not only can you get closer to your goals, but you realize you’ve already got it. Here’s how!

Find a comfortable seat and start grounding your energy into your body as you slow down your breath. Sit quietly with the breath,  smoothing out any wrinkles or ripples for the next couple minutes until you feel relaxed. Then visualize, yourself in your minds eye, achieving or acquiring whatever you want in life. Whether its losing weight, getting back to health, sleeping more, having your dream job, less angry, better skin, etc. Notice how your body (((feels))) when you see yourself as this “other” version of yourself.

What does that feel like, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually? When you feel healthy for example, you might feel more confident, relaxed, strong, happy, open, calm, content, fulfilled, secure ( positive feelings to uplift your energetic body)… Now sit with each emotion or state of being and REALLY FEEL IT. What it feels to fully embody it and what your life would even look like with this new attitude or character. What work life look like and how would this affect all your relationships with your family, friend, and love relationships? Most importantly the relationship you have with yourself.

Once you’ve gone through all the emotions and feeling states, start to become more aware of yourself in the room, sitting and breathing a little deeper. If your eyes are closed, open your eyes and notice how you feel. Try not to judge it, observe and sit with it for a minute.

The wonderful thing about this practice is, it can show you your own ability to experience what you already have. You know what it feels like because you’ve experienced it before, or you’ve seen it as a desired character in someone that inspires you. It was there all along. And the more you can connect with embodying what you already are, the universe brings you closer to what you want. It works quicker this way! Try it out, and let me know!

Beat the Heat with these Pitta Reducing Tips

Its been a ridiculously long hot “monsoon-y” summer-sometimes dry, moist, hot, humid, and overwhelming in general to say the least.

Summer according to Ayurveda is dominated by Pitta Dosha- which is comprised of the elements of water and fire. 

How does Pitta manifest in the physical body?

We may experience excess heat manifesting in skin irritations ( eczema flare ups, rashes, skin burning or reddening easily, redness or inflammation of the eyes, infections of the skin, etc), excess sweating or feeling of being hot, upset digestion ( diarrhea or loose stools), inflammation of the joints ( swollen and inflamed), etc. 

How does Pitta manifest in the mind?

 Excess heat may manifest in anger, feeling easily irritated or frustrated, jealousy, resentment, criticism, judgement, etc.  

Sound familiar?

Side note: Ayurveda in no way tries to box people into categories ( which is one of the reasons why I’ve heard it turns people off from it) rather it provides us with an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and how our environment and lifestyle choices affect our body and mind. We are then able to choose ( rather than live life blindly or in ignorance) what actions to take that will make us happy, healthy,  and content. **Suffering as they say is inevitable, but avoidable! 

SO, being someone who has a generous amount of Pitta in my constitution, and knowing my tendencies to heat up during the warmest of seasons,  I’ve engaged in lots of Pitta ( heat) reducing practices as part of my self care regime to stay cool and collected. 

Here are some great tips to beat the heat and stay calm and cool this summer:

1) Food/Diet:   Agni ( metabolism) tends to be high for pitta type individuals especially in warmer climates.  Focus on the tastes bitter, sweet, and astringent. *Remember that Ayurveda approaches food and herbs through a science of energetics. 

One of the best times to consume raw foods is during the summer ( or if you experience pitta in the digestive system) since metabolism is high and it can actually be soothing for the digestive system for someone with a hyperactive agni. **Eating cucumbers, anything coconut related ( coconut flesh, oil, water), watermelon, or certain dairy products for example, because of their sweet and cooling nature can counterbalance heat and keep physiological functions that may go awry during this time, at optimal.

2) Cold Water: Cool water is Pitta’s best friend, especially in the summer! Swimming is highly recommended especially when its not so warm outside and/or taking a cold shower can bring the temperature down greatly. **An Ayurvedic Practitioner and herbalist, Isabel Brenda reminded me that soaking one’s feet in cool water during the day can draw heat away from the body and keep temperatures moderate and tolerable!

3) Essential oils: Essential oils like geranium, rose, lavendar, lemongrass, and sandalwood for example can be diffused or used topically to calm and bring pitta dosha into balance.

4) Herbal Teas: Once again, focusing on herbs that are cooling, sweet, and bitter can help reduce excess heat/pitta from ones constitution. I personally enjoy an adrenal tonic tea in the summer that is nourishing and cooling at the same time. Herbs such as nettle, oat straw, fennel, rose, hibiscus, spearmint, and peppermint, can be enjoyed at room temperature or even slightly cooler during warm-hot days.

5) Color Therapy:  Wearing red and black are probably the last things I’d want to wear on a hot summer day. Those colors can actually aggravate Pitta and draw heat towards you! Focus on cooling calming colors such as green, blue, and white. Avoid heating colors such as yellow, red, and orange.

6) Nature/Walks:  Walking in nature can be so serene, promotes contentment and a peace of mind. But walking or running in peak Pitta times of the day can actually aggravate your dosha. Avoid being out in the heat during 10-2 when its the hottest and try and walk when its shady and cool out.

7)Yoga:  Chill out with twists ( wrings out excess heat from the solar plexus where heat is generally stored) and practice in a sweet, gentle way as to not aggravate pitta dosha. When we practice intensely, competitively, or critically we become more intense, competitive and critical at ourselves and others. When we integrate slow, calming, gentle, soft movements and mindset for our practice, we practice embodying those qualities into all aspects of our lives. 

Also practicing restorative yoga poses such as legs up the wall aka vipartia karani or supported bridge aka supported setu bandha it can be relaxing for the body and mind.

8) Healing herbs for pitta balancing support: Herbs are highly medicinal and balancing for both body and mind. Herbs such as aloe vera juice ( bitter and cooling), gaduchi, turmeric, neem, and burdock for example support healthy liver function, reduces inflammation, heals irritated skin and membranes. *Speak with an herbalist or Ayurvedic Practitioner for more info on dosage and using herbs for specific health conditions.

Despite the heat this summer, I’ve been able to stay cool. My mind is relaxed which tells me a lot. And by incorporating more raw foods into my diet, I’ve noticed that my digestion has improved and not to give too much information, but my stools are not loose. I also have a tendency to experience hot, inflamed, and irritated joints when its this warm, but these practices have helped keep circulation flowing, energy moving steadily, and inflammation and heat at bay.

Self Massage::::Self Care::::Self Love

Wow, its been a couple months since I’ve connected through my blogs and podcast…Life has taken me on a couple turns ( sharp ones too) and new bridges to cross in the last couple months. And there have been many changes in my life ( personal, work, general) and so  s p a c e  has been a great blessing to gain ~clarity~ and right vision. I feel inspired to write and connect with you all again to share my life story and inspirations , which deeply feeds my soul and helps me organize my thoughts…One thing I do want to share with you is my decision to go back to school to study Acupuncture!!! I’m super excited and I will definitely keep you posted on that one…

On the other hand, I just got back from leading a Senior Yoga Retreat in Lake Arrowhead. I led a group of 5 women from my Yoga class at Leisure World in Seal Beach, Ca. where I teach a couple times a week. It was relaxing, nourishing, peaceful, inspiring, and healing on many levels for myself and for all the participants.

During this weekend we ate delicious meals, practiced Yoga, and hiked around the lake.  But what might’ve been one of the most profound things we did this weekend, for me at least, was to teach everyone how to do *Abyangha* an Ayurvedic Self Daily Massage. 

The word oil in sanskrit is sneha, which means  “to love” . I taught my students how using warm oils and deliberately massaging it into our bodies is a radical form of self care and self love.  The benefits of massage and touch are so important and it can help improve our health in so many ways. Yet I think the actual practice of it is even more powerful! Taking a moment out of our busy day to give to ourself a massage sends a message to our psyche and being- How important we truly are to receive this nourishment and self care! It’s so easy to get caught up with life or we worry so much about others that we have forgotten about ourself. This is a fabulous practice to integrate into your self care regime and it cultivates more self-awareness and self love. I recommend it to everyone or at least give it a try!  

Benefits to Massage:

*Cleanses the lymphatic system our sewage system

*improves circulation and blood flow

*improves elasticity of the skin and promotes luster 

*a natural emollient, oil cleanses our skin

*provides a shield to protect our skin and body from outside pathogens 

*releases endorphins, bodies natural pain killers and anti-inflammatory 

*decrease in stress hormones cortisol which causes aging and dis-ease. Thus increasing immune functions and wound healing

*Grounding and helps center your mind

*improves your self esteem

*And as we age, the elasticity in our skin and muscle tone diminishes. Our skin is so much more sensitive and our minds can be spacier than ever ( vata stage of life). Oils are heavier and moist and help to combat and balance the “lightness” and airiness aging may bring. 

 HOW TO:

Warm up some oil. Coconut oil is cooling and best for summer or people experiencing excess heat or heat conditions. Sesame and sunflower is a gentle blend for most types of constitutions. Apply a liberal amount to your body starting from the crown of your head and down towards your feet ( grounding effect). Massage circles towards the heart and longer strokes on areas of length. Finish with a warm shower or bath and wipe oil off with a towel when complete. * Massage can take anywhere from 5-20 minutes depending on how much time you have)

5 Tips to Clear your Junk this Spring

Spring represents a time of renewal. The sun is starting to shine, snow is starting to melt, flowers are blooming and the energy in the air is lighter. Seasons shift gradually, but for some of us it can be very shocking especially for our health. One of the ways we can reduce the impact or effects is to detox or cleanse to ease the transition. Spring is known as a time for cleaning. Not just our homes, but why not our physical home that we inhabit 24/7-our body too?

Spring is one of the best times to detox the accumulation and heaviness from Winter-heavy foods and sleeping longer and any other hibernating patterns that kept us in our caves. Here are some tips to feel lighter, joyful, and healthier this Spring!

1) Increase Agni: Strengthen your digestive fire! Agni slows down when its cold, especially if we dampen it with heavier sweeter foods which we typically eat during Winter. Try a mono diet or cleanse and give your body a break as it transitions…or eat lighter foods ( seasonal) and add more greens and spices to your diet. *Cultivating a strong/balanced agni will help ward off disease-fewer allergy symptoms, clearer mind, reduce hormonal imbalances, etc.

2) Space!  Cleaning your home or car is no different than detoxing your physical body. You feel the same sense of relief or peace when clutter disappears. When we ~create space~ we feel lighter, more freedom, and expansiveness inside and out. Utilize this time to clear out the old, any clutter and trash and plant new seeds to grow.

3) Deep Breathing : The benefits of breathing are enormous!

*It can increase metabolism hence increasing agni and our ability to “digest”.

*Deep breathing acts in a way to activate the lymphatic system-our bodies sewage system which helps to  to cleanse and detox our system so that they are working at optimal levels.

*When exhaling we release excess carbon dioxide so that we can bring in more oxygen into our body. Exhaling we remove a huge percentage of our toxins through our breath alone!!!! 

*Breathing increases prana-life force energy. Without it we wouldn’t he alive today. It’s what the Chinese call, CHI or Ki. Breathing facilitates the movement of Prana hence increasing our energy and well being. 

4)Exercise: Get moving! Remove any stagnation and heaviness that can manifest in darkness, heaviness, sadness, or an inability to create or do anything. Exercising, walking, Yoga, dancing are great ways to move energy and build heat in the body ( also a great way to detox) activating shakti aka creative energy.

5) Redefine yourSelf!  Go in your closet and re evaluate the things you don’t wear or are totally outdated. I like to have clothing swaps ( someones trash is someones else’s treasure) or donate to the goodwill. Recycle! Ahhh the joy of getting rid of things that no longer feel like me, feels sooooooooo good!!! Since we’re constantly changing anyways, why now choose to wear the things or don’t wear things that you are in alignment with who you are now!

Yoga as a path towards Self-Realization-not just a form of physical exercise.

Yoga is an ancient science, but what I’ve observed over the many years, is that for myself and many others it has become a lifestyle-a way of living. Most of us on the path, strive for a more sattvic mind and peaceful way of being.  Many Yoga practitioners have adopted a Yogic or Ayurvedic diet and have integrated the yamas and niyamas as part of daily living( part of the 8 limbs of Yoga similar to the Bible’s 10 Commandments-an ethical code or guidelines in which to live our lives.) And of course the practice of asana ( 1 of 8 limbs of Yoga) to keep the body and mind purified and stable.

Now, I’ll admit, I’m addicted to Yoga and the way I feel after a great practice. That’s what keeps me coming back to my mat. And depending on what tradition or style you practice and speaking from purely a physical perspective, Yoga can whip your booty into tip top shape! Of course an additional benefit to practicing:) 

But is that why most of us practice? Purely for the physical and maybe because of some of the mental health benefits? I’m sure for some of us, it is. You get a good sweat and the more challenging poses keep us coming back for more. Sure, theres a spiritual element involved and in the core of our being I think a lot of us are yearning for a deeper connection to Self. But what does all that mean anyways? What actually happens during asana and breathing? Well one side of the coin is that there are physiological changes that happen in our body when we meditate and practice yoga, and modern science can prove that( what was known 5000 some years ago). There are great health benefits. But because Yoga is a Science of Living, there is another side.

Yoga in essence, is a system that helps us move beyond our own limitations. I’d even go as far as saying that many new age and holistic therapies are derived from this ancient healing science. And the physical practice is just as important because these emotional, mental , and spiritual “sheaths” affect one another in some way.  

Now how do we “move beyond our own limitations”? According to the Tantrics, we do that by increasing agni aka the inner light that gives life. Many ways to increase agni, and one way we do that is by affecting the flow of prana aka life force energy. Basically everything we do affects prana. And it’s not just what we do but HOW we do it.

According to Rod Stryker, Founder of ParaYoga and Master Tantra Yoga Instructor, he says that when we transform Jathara agni ( stomach that digests food) into Bhuta agni ( agni that digests the 5 elements) we become non-dualistic.  Once we dissolve the illusion that we exist in as a duality, we become AWAKE. We begin to see the sacred in all things as they truly are. When we realize that we are all connected by one common thread, and not separate as we see ourselves-separate nation, separate race, etc how can we bring ourselves to harm one another? In this awakening, we see that we have a greater purpose on this planet-to serve humanity and one another.  If not, why are we here?

 Yoga is a tool for transformation and awakening consciousness. And as we awaken, we light the path for others to “see” that we are more than just the clothes we wear, the jobs and homes we inhabit, our friends and status in life, or how many cars we own or don’t own. It’s about realizing that inside of us dwells a light that shines SO bright if you could actually see it, you could go blind. Such as in the story of Krisha and Arjuna from the Bhagavad-Gita when Arjuna ask to “see” God, and when Krisha “shows” himself he nearly loses his sign because of how powerful the presence of light was.

This “light” is creation in itself. And it dissolves the illusion that we are separate from ourselves and our planet. And I believe the key to peace for ourselves and our world is Self-Realization. So whether its Yoga, or eating a yummy bowl of ice-cream do what brings you closer to godliness. And lets make this world a better place for all of us to live in.
