Day to Day Resolutions
I was in San Jose for Thanksgiving weekend and I am so glad I decided to go! I was doubting my decision to travel because I felt like I had SO much to do down here!! BUT while on my trip, I realized that taking this time away from home was very similar to setting a new resolution for myself.
Essentially, I had the time to relax and reflect upon my life. I began to notice what areas of my life were taking up more energy, and/or where might I have been lacking attention for myself.
Well, for those of us who don’t have the opportunity to travel or take time off, New Year’s is just around the corner!! And for many of us it is a time to re evaluate our priorities and lifestyle choices. My question is: Why wait for the new year?
Our health, social life, relationships, work, finances, home and self improvements, etc. are all things that affect us on a day to day basis. Unexpectedly we get so caught up with life and we put our health on the back burner. The next thing you know, the holidaze are just around the corner, we become ill or eventually we wait for New Year’s to roll around to make our new resolutions!
*What was so enlightening about this trip was that it helped me to see that the intentions I create for myself on a daily basis, “fasting”, and/or taking time to reflect quarterly throughout the year helps me to stay balanced and on top of my game much easier than if I were to do it, lets say once a year.
So I wanted to offer you a couple tips and reminders of how we can stay balanced throughout the year, by creating day to day resolutions for ourselves, without getting burned out!
* To set goals for yourself that are realistic, and ones that you can accomplish in the next couple weeks to months. Keep it simple. From there, you can continue to build upon your goals taking them to the next level. When you are able to accomplish goals whether small or large, you will most likely want to continue on your path towards health and optimal living.
* When we set our intentions whether that is day to day, weekly, or even monthly it helps us to focus more on whats happening in the present moment rather than setting unrealistic goals for ourselves that we have been struggling to accomplish for years. Learning to change unhealthy habits and patterns have taken many years to develop and may take some time to work through. Remember that it is a continuous work in progress and to be patient and compassionate with yourself.
* Wherever we place our attention, that part of our life will grow. Whether that is a positive action or negative one, it will begin to flourish. Many times we get caught up on what we aren’t able to do, and forget all the great work that we have done. So remember to take time to give yourself a pat on the back and thank yourself!! We deserve it!
* Vision Boards are a great way to affirm your intentions. To say aloud, share with others, or see your creation on paper can be very empowering and can help us in keeping our commitments.
* A book I highly recommend is from one of my teachers, Rod Stryker. The book is called The 4 Desires and is based on the Yogic Theory of keeping the 4 Desires og Life in balance. They are Kama( Desires), Dharma ( “work”), moksha( our spiritual goals), and artha( finances).
Rod Stryker talks about how most of us are driven by fear and that if we want to change something in our life, we have to implement new patterns in replacement of the old one. One tool that he offered was to create a new habit or pattern you’d like to implement in your life, and whenever you find yourself repeating the old habit, instantly replace it with the new one!
*Make a commitment and trust that everything is unfolding in divine timing. Eventually the stress of having to MAKE it happen will diminish. When you come from a relaxed place, there will be more room for you to enjoy the process rather than focusing so much on the goal.
